What is a Personnummer?
A Swedish Personnummer is a 10-digit personal identity number, formatted as YYMMDD-XXXX. Introduced in 1947, this system is the foundation of Sweden’s efficient social administration.
The Structure of the Number
The number is logically constructed. The first six digits represent your date of birth in a YYMMDD format. The last four digits are a personal serial number, where the last digit is a checksum for validation. The three digits before the checksum also indicate your legal gender: an odd number for male and an even number for female.
Did you know? There are different types of numbers. A standard Personnummer is for permanent residents and citizens. A Coordination Number (Samordningsnummer) is often given to temporary residents; it looks the same, but with 60 added to the birth day (e.g., March 15th becomes 15+60=75).
Why is the Personnummer So Important?
It’s impossible to overstate the importance of a Personnummer in Sweden. It’s more than an ID; it’s the core of Sweden’s highly digitized society, and without it, daily life can be incredibly difficult.
You will need your Personnummer for nearly all official and commercial activities, including:
- Opening a bank account.
- Getting a mobile phone subscription.
- Renting or buying a property.
- Accessing healthcare services.
- Applying for social benefits from Försäkringskassan.
- Getting a job and paying taxes.
Crucially, the Personnummer is the foundation for BankID, Sweden’s essential e-identification system. Without a Personnummer, you cannot get a BankID, severely limiting your digital life in Sweden. In short, it is your “pass” to living in Sweden.
